Design overview
StoryForge turns real-life experiences into personalized storybooks for parents and children aged 3–6. Parents create on iPhone and read together with their child on iPad, using stories to explore feelings, choices and relationships.
Our interviews with 30 single-child and multi-child families revealed two connected needs.
They may forget to tell parents about their day or struggle to describe how they feel. Stories give them a concrete starting point for expression.
They may get little back when asking about the day, or notice a difficulty and feel unsure how to help. Shared stories offer a way to begin the conversation.

Parents and children read together through colorful story worlds. Choices, different perspectives and specific questions turn reading into a shared conversation.
Children explore actions and consequences through simple choices.
The same event unfolds through different characters’ feelings and perspectives.
Expert-informed prompts suggest questions parents can ask, helping children share their thoughts.
Both story modes are available to single-child families and families with siblings.
3 Reflect & follow up · From stories to daily life
AI summaries and next steps connect children’s responses with ideas to try in daily life. Dashboard questions help families revisit similar situations; badges and growth records make participation and small steps visible.
A dashboard question revisits the story’s situation. Parents share whether their child tried an idea from the story and what happened in real life.

StoryForge aims to bring emotional learning into everyday family life: making room for children’s voices, supporting parents in uncertain moments, and connecting reflection with real experiences.
Stories and choices offer concrete ways to explore emotions, consider another person’s perspective and express thoughts with a parent.
Expert-informed questions offer a starting point when parents are unsure how to respond, keeping them actively involved in understanding their child.
Community story sharing helps families discover relevant experiences and new ways to begin conversations about common challenges.
